Part of river to be closed for barge rehearsals

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 30 May 2006 :-

Part of river to be closed for barge rehearsals

A section of the Chao Phraya river will be closed to boat traffic for five days during rehearsals for the royal barge procession to mark the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King's accession to the throne.

Thawalrat Onsira, chief of the Marine Department, said the section from the Memorial Bridge to Thon Buri Bridge will be closed to allow rehearsals today from 6 am to 11 am and 4.30 to 10 pm. The next rehearsals are scheduled for June 2 at 10.30 am-12.30 am and 3-10 pm, June 6 at 6.30-8.30 am and 3-10 pm, and June 9 at 3-10 pm. Closure on June 12, procession day, will be from 7-9 am and 2-10 pm.

No boats will be allowed to moor on the Chao Phraya river and adjacent areas - Pak Klong Bangkok Noi, Pak Klong Mon and Pak Klong Bangkok Yai, he said.

Chaisak Angsuwan, director-general of the Aviation Department, said aviation safety measures have been prepared for foreign VIP guests.

He said commercial airlines have been informed of flight plan changes and were prepared to land at U-tapao airport if requested.

Meanwhile, the King and the Royal Family will make an appearance on a balcony of the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall to receive respects from the public on June 9 at 11 am, after a ceremony to pay their homage to the late kings of the Chakri dynasty at a royal pavilion behind the Chakri Mahaprasat Throne Hall.

Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Visanu Krue-ngarm, chairman of the panel responsible for organising the royal celebrations, said the change of venue from the Chakri Mahaprasat Throne Hall followed Her Majesty the Queen's advice.

He said a religious ceremony would be held at Ammarinthorn Vinitchai Throne Hall on June 8.
