Ayam bars in Jakarta and normal bars?

Ayam bars refer to bars where most of the girls are prostitutes or hostesses. In the clubs where expats go, prostitution is quite usual but it is much more subtle than in the places frequented by locals. Girls may ask for money directly, but they may also be looking for "taxi money" only, meaning that she will tell you in the morning she needs money to go back home and she will expect you to pay for it. The other option is to ask for "gifts": Mobile phone, jewellery, clothes, etc... After a short period, they will also probably have a brother, an uncle or a cow who's sick, and who can only be cured if you wire them a thousand bucks... Don't be stupid, as soon as she asks you for money, just end the relationship. I'm not saying you should never give anything, but at least use your brain to sort what is true and what is just lies.

There are basically 3 areas where you will find prostitutes bars in Jakarta:
1) Blok M, also called Jalan Falatehan, is where American and English older expats go. Not all the bars there have prostitutes (Sportmans and One Tree Bar are ayam-free for instance), but most do. The girls there are mostly freelance, sometimes with a boyfriend pimp. If you ask the girls, almost all of them will tell you they have a boyfriend in Australia, England, America, or offshore... but in spite of that, they are still in a bar, trying to get another guy for the night. One more time, be extremely careful when engaging in emotional relationships with these girls because you do not want to be attached to someone who screws a half dozen guy a month for 50 bucks. Im not saying it's bad, i'm saying it messes up your brain. Near Jalan Falatehan, you also have what we call "Little Tokyo", which is an even larger red light district than Blok M, only that this one caters more exclusively to the entertainment needs of Korean and Japanese people. There are dozens of bars and karaokes there, but apart from the above-mentioned nationalities, few people go there.

2) North Jakarta and the city's peripherical areas (Taman Anggrek, Daan Mogot, etc..) where most local people will go in the one-stop entertainment nightclubs (with karaoke, massage parlour, bars, clubs, spa and sometimes casinos all under one roof) or other local curiosities such as massage bars, panti pijat, tempat dugem... In these places, the girls are usually under contract with the management, and though they get a correct salary for indonesian standards, they have very poor perspectives. There are also many high-class prostitutes and escort girls in Kota (the most beautiful girls are not to be found in Blok M, nor in Hotel bars, but in places like Alexis, Golden Crown, Malioboro, Sun City, which also "import" girls from China, Thailand, Russia, Uzbekistan, and even Spain!). They earn comfortable salaries and they often have some regular customers who pay them cars, houses, etc... Their salaries can be over 10,000$/month for the top prostitutes.


3) Hotel bars such as B.A.T.S in Hotel Shangri-La, Tiga Puluh in Hotel Le Meridien, or CJ in Hotel Mulia, for travellers, with also quite many expats. Girls there can be very interesting sometimes, with fun, smart personalities, yet obsessed with money, Blackberries and Louis Vuitton. Many can be quite good party-friends, especially if you want to go party some place else, since most of the times, the same girls will move from BATS after it closes to Top Gun (Blok M) or to Stadium.

Normal bars and clubs are geographically more limited to the center : Menteng, Plaza Indonesia, Kuningan, and South Jakarta: Gatot Subroto, Kemang, Senayan.

In these places, if you dress appropriately and look ok, you should not have too much trouble meeting ladies. The easiest spot to get a normal girl (that you won't pay for sex) is Red Square I think and it is so true that it kind of became the only place most expats go to because you are almost certain to score each time you are there. Actually, in other places, it is not difficult either, but you may only get a phone number, or have to be a little patient...

Randy Travis once sang that he'd 'read tell, the road to hell, was paved with good intentions.'

The Highway to Elle, by way of contrast, is replete with good inventions, like an all night Happy Hour (buy one, get one free) on Thursdays, that starts at 8pm and continues till...well, very late, but this writer's perceptions became unclear after about 11 o'clock on the night of April 1st.

An amnesiac state thereafter is mute testimony to one's enjoyment of a night-spot, and the Highway is enjoyable. Run by an Englishman, Darryl Patton, who is usually present and mingles sociably with the guests, whilst ensuring that the delightful barmaids keep the taps turned on, the place opened about three years ago.

It differs from some other Falatehan joints in that the search for new friends is not quite at the level of 'shooting fish in a barrel,' which can be found elsewhere in this short street. But neither does it resemble the nearby Sportsman's 'escorted ladies only' environment.
As the clock moves inexorably forward, there is a steady trickle of unattached females, which may not amount to tsunami dimensions but nevertheless would surely be described by my long-dead grammar school teacher as 'an adequate sufficiency.'

The management entertains its patrons with regular performances by the staff, who mount the low stage and dance - with more determination than flair, it must be said - but they are followed later by dancers imported from outwith the premises, who are not only more professional, in every sense, but much more provocative. These latter lasses have been known to seek one-to-one feedback from their audience once the gyrations end, flitting and flirting among the customers along the bar.

Darryl is a noted country and western song-writer and his CD music is on sale there. Billiards fans can indulge in their favourite pastime too.

Indonesian Girls & Expats: Why So Many Expats Will Start Cheating In Jakarta?

You may have noticed, men seem quite happy in Indonesia. No matter how dumb and ugly they are, there will always be a fair number of pretty and hot girls gravitating around them. Add to that the expat compensation package, the maid, the driver and the cheap flights to Bali and you have everything a man could dream of: Big pay, no chores, hot girls.

On the contrary, life is hard on expat wives or worse, on single women. Thank God (or unfortunately) most of them don’t see what is happening behind their backs. Among the expats that I know, I can tell you that 90% of them, married or not, have had an affair or cheated on their girlfriends with an Indonesian girl at least once. The only ones that are faithful have stopped partying or, it exists, are absolutely, truly, deeply in love. It’s not just some old, fat pervert working in oil. The more often, it’s the good husband, with kids and family. I’ve been out partying for years in Jakarta, 5 days a week, and in each bar I went to, I met tons of them. Go to Bats, go to Blok M, got to stadium, etc, etc, and you will see them, getting crazy on the dancefloor and enjoying their lives as they never do at home. Some will say that it’s just easier here with girls and I agree. But does it explain everything? My friends are handsome and cool; they could find girls to cheat with in France. They are rich too, they could pay prostitutes. I know they do it in Jakarta, but they would never do it in France. Why is that? Why do Expats start cheating their wives when they arrive in Jakarta? Is it specific to Jakarta?

I see 3 reasons for that:
- In Indonesia, many men can get girls that are way more attractive than what they could have had in their home countries. Not only more beautiful, the girls can be much younger too, and look much younger anyway. These girls are attracted to foreigners for various reasons: Financial stability, attraction for “white” people (and the perspective of having a mixed baby), and certainly also the desire to be with someone less conservative than most Indonesian men. As long as an expat is somewhat cute or nice, he will be popular among girls here in Jakarta, and for some of them, it means they will be able to date girls they are really fond of. When the guy is 40 years-old, just about to undergo a mid-life crisis, he is very fragile and it won’t take long before he thinks about what his life could be with a 25 year-old exotic beauty.
The nightlife scene in Jakarta is a lot of fun and excitement. There are great nightclubs in European cities, but few are as open and diverse as the nightlife scene in Jakarta. When you are an expat in Jakarta, you rarely have to queue, you always get admitted, you are at the center of the attention, and you can afford booking a table and opening Champagne. This makes the whole experience much more enjoyable. Many people party a lot more here, and therefore meet a lot more new people. As an expat, there is also a good chance that you will be far from your family on many occasions, because your wife didn’t follow you, or if she did, she travels back home more often. These periods are extremely dangerous because guys will go out more, and they will have many opportunities to cheat. Much more than opportunities I will say temptations. Temptation is everywhere, beauty, young-ness, easy relationships…Difficult to resist.
Traditional girls vs. Modern girls. Most people will tell you Indonesian girls are different. Their behaviours towards men are much more traditional and less independent than that of most foreign women. I think the authority of the man for instance is much more respected and it gives them the feeling of being in charge. The roles within the mixed couple are also more specific. Actually, they resemble those that were assigned to couples in Europe or the USA before the liberalization of women in the 70s. While we may regret that, many men feel uncomfortable with what they perceive as strong, independent, ambitious women. In Indonesia, they will meet girls that correspond more accurately to their ideas of the perfect wife. And once again, they may fall in love quickly.


These are the three main reasons which I think can explain why so many expats in Jakarta start cheating when they arrive in Jakarta. There might be a lot more explanations, but I just thought it was interesting to open the subject because I realized how crazy people become when they arrive here, and I’ve always wonder why this city can create such transformations on people.

Expats dating Indonesian girls are numerous, and many will find that though certain aspects of their relationships are much easier than with a western girl, there are also some difficulties that men need to take seriously if they want to be successful. I listed the 4 main hardships expats have to overcome when dating an Indonesian girlfriend:

Money: Dealing with the gap in revenues between you and your Indonesian girlfriend is not an easy task. It may not be a problem at the beginning, but soon, some issues will appear: Who needs to pay for the restaurant? For the plane ticket to Bali when you go on holidays? How do you arrange her coming to your home country? Should you help her when she or a member of her family gets sick, and to what extent?The situation faced by many expats is that they don't mind paying, because they understand that the girl cannot afford some expenses that are clearly part of the "expat lifestyle". However, they do not want to be considered as cash cows or walking ATMs. The guy may also wonder if the girl is "interested", meaning that as soon as the money flow stops, the girl will walk away without any regrets.

To reach the perfect balance between giving money and being treated with respect, I would recommend you to follow a few rules:
- Pay for goods or services directly. Do not give cash.
- Even for small amounts, do not give the impressions that money isn't important for you. Always show that the act of buying something is a rationale decision, not an impulsive one. Make her understand that you worked hard for the money you earned.
- If she asks you money for her family, take the matter seriously. Visit them, and make sure that everyone is doing its share too, including all the relatives. If you find out she is lying to you, do not tolerate it and walk away from the relationship.
- Depending on her income, make sure you don't pay for everything, everywhere and never get anything in return. You should make her feel as if you paying is not an automatic thing.
- Control yourself: Adapt your lifestyle too and try to spend less than usual. It can be very uncomfortable for a girl to have everything paid for her, without being able to give something back. By going to less expensive restaurants, you give her the opportunity to treat you as well.

Religion: This is the second most important topic when dating an Indonesian girl because few of them will make a compromise about it. If you are catholic and no ready to adapt, then you will have some troubles finding an Indonesian girl who suits you. Even if she is not that religious, chances are her family is, and they will not tolerate anything but a Muslim wedding. If you find yourself in this kind of situation, I think you need to convince your girlfriend that the best you can do is "fake" the conversion to become Muslim in order to look good in front of her family, but keep your own religion without telling people except her. If you are not ready to do that, and if she doesn't understand it as well, then you should find a Christian or Hindu girl, they make up 10% of the Indonesian people so it's not that hard to find.

Age Gap: The age difference, quite common in expats/Indonesian girls’ couples, is less a problem than one could imagine. Dating older men for an Indonesian girl is not necessarily seen as a bad thing, because older men are deemed more adequate to provide girls with the security they need. Yet, the age difference may also be a difficulty because it adds to the incomprehension between the two partners. 10 Signs Your Indonesian Girl Is Cheating On You

You are an expat living in Jakarta involved in a relationship with an Indonesian girl? Are you wondering how serious she is with you? We know that the bar scene in Indonesia is very adventurous, and though it is easy to meet a decent girl, you may also end up with someone whose only interest is to suck you dry.

Ayam, man-eaters, etc.. There are a lot of expressions to designate these girls but my favourite term is "Professional Girlfriend": Her job, the one activity that earns her revenue, is to be your girlfriend, or to make you believe she is. And they are great at it because they are pros.

There are some easy things to spot in her behaviour that will help you guess if she's faking the whole thing or not. I listed 10 of them and I hope they will help you realize if yours is on the game or not:

1) You met your girlfriend in a bar in Jakarta: To be honest, if it was a massage parlour, a club in Kota, a bar in Blok M, or a karaoke, there is a 99% chance she is a fake. All girls there will be after your money. Your only chance is that she was in such a place by accident, but that never really happens.

2) Your Indonesian girlfriend protects her phone in an abnormal manner. My ex (which I found out was cheating) was behaving very strangely with her phone: First, the screen was locked with a password. It meant that if she wanted to call someone, she had to type a password first... a real pain in the ass don't you think? Then, wherever she would go, she would always, always take her phone with her: In the toilet, in the shower, in the kitchen... She would never forget it, and if she did, she would come back in a hurry to get it, and she would ask me, worried: Did you take a look at my phone? Clearly, I understand the concept of privacy, but such behaviour is a clear indicator that your Indonesian girl is hiding something.


3) She, who once cheated, will cheat again. If you believe that, then you can ask her about the previous men she was dating. I remember my ex was very confuse about it: She was telling me about her Dutch guy with whom she had been for 3 years, her American guy she had dated for 2 and a half year, her German guy that she had loved for 4 years, etc. She was only 24, but she had had lots of relationships, and long ones. The secret for that, I discovered, was that all of them were dated during the same period of 3 years, at the same time. Don't expect a girl who did that kind of cheating to be nicer with you!

4) She lies all the time to you and to other people. The reason for that is simple: It's hard to be deceptive, and when someone's life is a lie, he cannot always find good excuses for everything. She cannot keep track of all the lies she is saying because it is not possible for a normal human being. Normal girls don't lie because they don't have to and if you indo girlfriend is lying to you; it means that she is not behaving normally. This is not something you want.
Be strict with her: First lie and she's out.

5) Another sign that can help you see if the girl you are dating is having multiple boyfriends: She refuses to talk to you about problems that make her mad/sad/depressed. Usually, she will say she has "problems at home", but don't take her word too seriously: Chances are she is angry because one of the expats she is dating stopped sending her money, or because she fought with her Indonesian guy.

6) When you meet your girlfriend's friends, you realize that all of them have a rich expat boyfriend, and most of them are cheating on him. When you talk about this to your girl, she demonstrates full support for her friends, and you even feel that she thinks it's normal. She will tell you that you are different, because your love is so special, etc.. Be smart and ask yourself if this is the kind of world you want to live in.

7) The sex part is tricky: It is very easy for a girl to fake orgasm, or at least pleasure. Also, it won't be difficult for her to make you believe she is attracted to you physically and that she enjoys having sex. I don't think you should put to much emphasis on it, but still, if you have the feeling that for her having sex with you is a chore, you are right to be suspicious. Those “prostitutes” do not look like hookers: They are young, cute, and they seem so nice that it is hard to imagine what is behind their smiles: That doesn’t mean you should stop enjoying your time in Jakarta: If the sex with her is good and you are not emotionally attached, I say don't pay too much attention to it, but then protect yourself and do not fall in love. Living in Jakarta is confusing, and it's getting at me: Here are 7 random tips for those of you living or travelling to Jakarta. I'm sure at least one of them will improve your life here.. at least I hope... Don't hesitate to add your own!

1) The best tip ever for avoiding the traffic in Jakarta:

Ok, I’m a little exaggerating here since you cannot avoid traffic in Jakarta. But trust me; you can save precious time by following this advice:

- ALWAYS position yourself on the good side of the street when you want a taxi. I mean that if you want to go to a building that is on the right side of the road, you should always take the taxi on the right side of the road. In other, normal cities it may not be that important, but in Jakarta it is essential because of what we call the "putar balik" (Turn back). Cars can rarely just turn on the right to go to a building. They have to go far, far away, and come back to go on the other side of the road. This is the putar balik and it explains why you have to position yourself correctly when taking a taxi. I have a small example here (with a small putar balik, but just imagine it is a few kilometres long, and that the traffic is horrible).

I guess you can easily see how you could save a lot of time on this drawing. Of course you have to use your legs a little but you can't have everything...




2) Money tip: High End malls are more expensive in Jakarta than in the US or Europe.
Many people completely lost the sense of reality being in Jakarta, and they go shopping in luxury malls like Senayan City or Grand Indonesia, just before flying back to their home countries. The common sense is that the stuff there is cheaper. Wrong: A Lacoste polo, a Levi's jeans, a Diesel T-Shirt, all this is more expensive. Save your money and go to middle class malls like Mangga Dua Square or Casablanca is you want to find a bargain... Another money tip: Don't buy cigarettes in the airport, you will find them twice as cheap right outside the gates..

3) Family means it's suitable for everyone: Family Karaoke, Family massage, etc... If the word family is not mentioned next to those words, you have a 95% chance to be offered sexual services...

4) Never bribe a policeman when you did not do anything wrong... The guy will try to scare you and make you wait maximum 10 minutes, but that's it... If you start paying him something, he will be under the impression that Bules are easy targets so do us a favour too...

5) If you don't have kids, don't go living in Kemang (except if your work there)! Don't be silly... Traffic is horrible nowadays in Kemang, and you should try to do anything you can to avoid it. Apart from following my tip number 1), you should always choose the location of your house or apartment according to your workplace ONLY. You have amazing houses in Menteng, twice as big as any house you could get in Europe for the same price; you don't need to go so far south to find a quiet, relaxing place to live. If you are not into houses, the best apartments in Jakarta are on Jalan Sudirman. If all your friends are in Kemang, don't worry, you will find new, saner people here in the centre.


6) For your weekends, save yourself some money and visit Indonesia. Come on: Have you seen how big this country is? Indonesia has 17,500++ islands, hundreds of ethnic groups, of languages, and travelling from tip to tip is like going from Madrid to Moscow. You have everything other countries in Asia have in here, no need to go anywhere else... You will save yourself the Rp 1M exit tax, plus the plane ticket.

7) If you like to party, try partying in Kota. People are often scared of venturing up North at night because of the bad reputation surrounding it, but I can tell you that this is where the heart of Jakarta nightlife beats. Kota has more clubs, with more variety, and greater music than in the south. The crowd is eclectic, young and loves to party. It’s not just about hanging with socialites and executives.

In this article, I will give you information about the best bars and nightclubs in Jakarta for women (both expats and Indonesians).
This blog may seems to be made for male expats since many posts talk about Jakarta nightlife's naughty spots like spas, massage parlours, girlie's bars.. I also wrote a few articles about the relationships between expats and Indonesian girls, or between expats and bargirls, or about dating Indonesian girls.

If you are a woman, expat or not, living in Jakarta, you should not think that partying here is a masculine thing to do only. On the contrary, there are actually dozens of places that I'm sure you will enjoy, which are clean, classy and where you will not find any prostitutes.

I asked some of my girl friends what were their favourite spots to go to in Jakarta before writing this blog article. I was actually surprised to hear that not all of them like the same bars and nightclubs, and that they may not always be scared to go to places where many ayam party as well. The reason for that is that many single expat women are looking for single expat men, and one of the best ways to get them is to go to the bars where lots of local girls are. B.A.T.S and Red Square are among these. Of course both are full of hookers, but it is also great to meet young expats. Other venues like Bartele's bars (De Hooi, Cazbar, EP), which are not girlie bars but still "bars for men" are very popular among expat girls, for the same reasons. The ladies night in Blu Martini on Wednesday and in MO bar on Tuesday night are growing in popularity too.

Many of my friends also told me that girls can be quite fed up with Jakarta's electronic scene. It is true that electronic music, in particular progressive, house and techno is played in 90% of the night clubs in Jakarta. If you enjoy "real" music and social dances, you may not be so pleased with that. This is the reason why many expatriate women told me they loved venues such as Mistere (Ritz-Carlton) or the Hacienda, which both have Latin/salsa nights. Other bars with "something else than electro" are BBs in Menteng (now closed), Black Cat in Senayan Arcadia, Nine Muses in Kemang (now closed also).

Another important criterion for many of my girl friends was that they appreciate when a bar or a night-club is well-decorated, stylish and clean. The favourites in this range are Immigrant in Plaza Indonesia, Buddha Bar in Menteng, Potato Head in Pacific Place, Dragonfly in Gatot Subroto. These bars always come spontaneously as the best places to go for having a drink with friends. For a date, I was told about Bibliotheque, Capocaccia, Domain, Cork & Screw , Loewy and Face Bar.

At last, good venues for clubbing seems to be South Jakarta's most famous discos, like X2, Dragonfly, Blowfish and Indochine. My friends are in average around 25-30 years-old so none of them talked about Kemang's club. Personally, I think that Amor, Venue and Nu China are quite popular among girls, especially Indonesian in their early 20s.

The lesbian scene in Jakarta is very discreet. I have little info about it so I welcome anyone to comment. From what I heard, the only lesbian club in Jakarta is Matra 21. Other venues are "lesbian-friendly", such as Comedy Cafe, Nine Muses and Burgundy in Grand Hyatt. Also, the One Tree Bar in Blok M has a "Lesbo Night" on Monday (or is it Tuesday?)..

I hope this post will help you decide where to party at night in Jakarta if you are a woman. I realize that most clubs and bars here target males, but if you aren't too picky, you should not have any trouble having fun here. If you know other venues of Jakarta nightlife popular with girls, please do not hesitate to comment!

A Bangkok Expat's Trip to Jakarta
Jakarta nightlife didn't mean anything to me until a few months ago, when a good friend living in Thailand had some business to attend to in Jakarta. When he came back, he couldn't stop telling us how Jakarta was better than Bangkok concerning the nightlife.. I made a small research, read this blog (Jakarta100bars), and decided it was time for me also to discover the bars and nightclubs of Southeast Asia's most populous city.

First of all, we went to Classic Hotel for a massage. The massage I would describe it as soapy without soap if you know what I mean. With the soapy massages the girl glide on your body by using plenty of water and soap. At the Classic Hotel, they don't apply all that however (at least the gal I was with), they do do the body kissing and body-to-body massage, the whole 9 yards! Price was reasonable: 550k for 1.5 hour with a tight and firm 19 year old girl!

Right after that we went to Alexis, drank and ate in the club while watching the shows. Then we went upstairs and did the pool and the rest. Prices are still the same as mentioned on this blog. 1jt for indo, 2 jt for thai and chinese. They hadeven a colombian girl running around. She may have been more expensive..

That all happened on Thursday which was scheduled as the naughtiest day of the stag do. Because following Alexis we went to Blok M. We went to My Bar after 3 am and only the leftovers were there as you can imagine. Following that, we headedover to Stadium till close (6 or 7 am) and even Mille's until Friday noon. I Had never been in a hole resembling Mille's before, and there are no such things in Bangkok. Hilarious though! Packed as well! My guys couldn't believe their eyes Jakarta was still going strong even on Friday afternoon:-)

I almost forgot the Wednesday before.. We had good times in Dragonfly, packed with nice looking high class girls. Finally, Friday we had a great group together in Red Square which all of my people really enjoyed.

For anybody living in Bangkok or Thailand, I need to say also that Jakarta is way better: The naughty nightlife is not as obvious and it is not a tourist attraction, but the atmosphere is completely crazy here.. I will be back!

The exchange rate is not so great, but what is a few dollars difference for a bit of safety and a peace of mind.

I changed mine at ITC Kuningan. Its on the 1st floor and is located just before BCA Bank Kuningan Branch. There are 2 money changers on the 1st floor, you can check which gives the better rate before you change. Both are trustworthy and but sometimes their rate may differs from 10 - 20 points.

Went to Maliobord hotel spa today and heres my FR:

reach at 830 as i looking forward to the pool striptease. but when reach there, its almost over. was told that the 2 timings are now: 6 to 630 and 8 to 830. So for those who wish to soak in pool and see naked gers, do take note of the new timing.

then proceed to lounge for dinner. got approached by the strip gers and agreed to buy a lady a shot. could be due to the fast tempo music and too much focus on her boobs, in 10min, she took 8 shots. she requested for 2 more to make it 10, but i kindly reject her.

End of the evening with a massage. quite funny, theres a panda massage and i was wondering what is panda massage. then was told that it refers to massage by china lady. took the local massage for 200k and the massage by the indonesia ger was good. a panda massage cost 300k. btw, do the massage gers provide hj? she didnt initiate so i dint ask.

Jakarta has everything, and it is very often better than elsewhere: Luxurious bars in Jakarta are more luxurious than the ones in Singapore. Chinese mega-clubs in Jakarta are bigger than the ones in Shanghai. Expat bars in Jakarta have nicer expats than the ones in Bangkok… And so on. I think that if you take a look at the bars presented in our blog, it will give you a good idea of what's available here. The freedom
There are a lot less rules in Indonesia as opposed to Europe, especially if you are a foreigner and if you have money. In general, many problems find solutions quickly here. You never wonder in Jakarta whether or not you will be able to enter a club or not. You just put a shirt and a jean and that’s fine. If you are a smoker, Jakarta will be your heaven: Smoking is very common everywhere and actually, in some clubs there is so much smoke that breathing is smoking. If you are drunk, you don’t need to worry about drunk-driving as there are many taxis available quickly. If you choose to drive, you won't fear the cops: Rp.50,000 and you will get away with almost anything. The cheap cost of living also gives you more freedom since you don’t have to care that much about the prices of the drinks and the cover charges, except in the luxurious places of course. The town is also paradoxical: Even though Indonesians are conservative, Jakarta has hundreds of massage parlours, karaokes and clubs where drugs are available very easily. In that case, beware of the apparent freedom, because a night out could easily end as a nightmare.

Indonesians
Foreigners usually imagine that Asians are shy, or don’t know how to party. This couldn’t be more false: Jakartans are great party-goers who love to dance and get wild. And the best thing with it is that they want to share it with others: No matter in which club you are, you will always find someone to talk to, and it is quite common to be invited to a table of people you don’t know and share a bottle with them. Indonesians will never make you feel unwelcomed and will be very curious to discuss with you if they can. Don’t miss this opportunity to socialize with people from different backgrounds and even do some networking… Girls are usually very friendly too, even those who belong to high-class society. All you need to do is to be very respectful and not behave as if all of them were prostitutes or “easy women”.
Bar-hopping
What I really love when partying is moving from bars to bars and change atmosphere a few times during the night. To go from classy hotel bars to huge mega-clubs and finish in a small bar singing karaoke, without any hassle and no queues. In Jakarta, there are so many places, usually within a short distance, that bar-hopping is just awesome. Cover charges are usually pretty low or inexistent and queues are very rare so you won’t lose any time going from place to place. If you navigate with a taxi, you won’t have any difficulties to get one and the traffic at night is usually pretty good.

The opening hours
In Jakarta, if you come on a Friday night, you can actually party non-stop until Monday morning, and I’m not kidding. All you need to have is a good knowledge of which clubs open when. If you hate the frustration of having to go home at midnight or 1AM in other Asian cities, you will love Jakarta. That is why planning a week-end of party in Jakarta can be so exhausting. Certainly, these are also the best.

Preparing a Party Weekend in Jakarta?

Jakartans leave their work early on Fridays, hoping they can beat the traffic to the airport and enjoy a week-end in Bali or Singapore, away from the pollution.

On the contrary, on the same day, another crowd of people, a mix of expats and locals from nearby Asian countries actually choose to spend their weekend in Jakarta. These people have one thing in mind: To enjoy the great atmosphere of the nightlife here and they have made the right choice (see our previous post to understand why)!

Yet, many people write us because they don’t feel as safe in Jakarta as in KL, Singapore, or even Bangkok. Forums on the internet are full of stories about scams, tourist traps, annoyances and even terrorism that it makes sense to have people scared. We, at Jakarta100bars, cannot tolerate that! But since we cannot pick up each of you at the airport, we decided to write this little guide. We hope it will answer all the basic questions you may have about your trip in the capital and if it doesn’t, we encourage you to comment. If you have more interrogations, please just ask, and we will answer as soon as we can.


From the airport to your hotel:
Like in any airport, the arrival in Jakarta can be stressing since you become the center of attention as soon as you exit, in particular from taxi drivers. To prevent them from insisting too much, act as confident as possible and give the impression that you know where you are going.
So where are you going? You have a $3 shuttle than can take you in the centrally-located Gambir Station, but it is better for the first time to take a cab, unless you are on a tight budget.
Taxis won’t cost you more than $10 to $15 and you will arrive directly in front of your hotel. People are still recommending the use of Blue Bird taxis only, but in my opinion many brands are safe as well, including Express, Gamya, Taxiku and all the taxis looking brand new. It may sounds like an approximate rule of thumb but it works. You may have bad luck and have to deal with a bad driver, but it happens with Blue Birds as well.
You can book a taxi straight after the custom check at one of their counters. Alternatively, you can go to the taxi line, a 100 meter away from the arrival gate on the left. There are several brands there you can choose from, and you will get a coupon with your destination and a number to call in case you have a problem with the driver. Before accepting to enter a taxi, ask if the toll is included or not to avoid surprises.

Which hotel should you choose and where?
First tip: Lower your expectations! The overall quality of hotels is pretty low in Jakarta, except in the 5-stars range where the offer is plethoric. You can see that many hotels were decent at the time they were opened, but they are deteriorating fast. Don’t listen to someone if he tells you a place was good “a few years ago”. Far too often, you don’t get the good-value you could expect from a country with such a cheap cost of living. Apart from this guide, check what people are saying on internet forums but pay attention to the date the message was posted.

I won’t give you the names of all the hotels that are acceptable, but a more general overview of which are the good areas to stay and what are the popular hotels in these areas. If you come with the intention of partying, you will be happy to know that most hotels in Jakarta are girl-friendly, except for some family hotels. I’m not saying the front office won’t give you a bad look if you come back drunk at 4AM with a hooker, but they wion't call the cops either. If you encountered a problem in one of the hotels listed below, please comment.

Low-budget/Midrange Hotels
In the low-budget range (from Rp. 50,000 to Rp. 200,000 per night), the hotels in Jalan Jaksa will be your best option. Most of the places are quite crappy, but it is in a good location and you will find a lot of services available for travellers there. The street, a much smaller version of Bangkok’s backpacker street Khao San Road, has also many cafés and restaurants and is a good spot for meeting other people. Jalan Jaksa residents are somewhat looked down upon by other expats and girls in particular could be a little turned off at the idea of coming to your place. You can do as I did when I was there and say that you "live near Plaza Indonesia”.

Without prior reservation you should be able to find something quickly but you can also call the following places (I remind you that almost all hotels in Jaksa are shitty, but some are worst than others):
Kresna Hotel (021-325403): 40,000rp, no aircon and bathroom is outside. Basic but calm.
Bloem Steen Hotel (021-325389): Friendly, cheap (40,000 rp), no aircon and bathroom outside.
Borneo Hostel (021-3140095): Very basic, but clean and it has big rooms (around rp. 100,000)
Memory Café Hotel: Memories Café has a few bad rooms upstairs, with no aircon but bathroom inside. Noisy, yet lively.
Margot (021-3913830), very popular, is full of girls brought by other travellers. It costs rp. 220,000, with TV, hot water, air-con.

Jalan Jaksa is approximately 5 minutes away in walking distance from Sarinah Mall and from a Transjakarta bus station. With these, and for a fraction of the price of a taxi, you can reach Blok M or Kota easily. It is also a great way to avoid traffic since they have dedicated lines.

If you feel a little adventurous, the best places to sleep in Jaksa are actually located within the “gangs”, i.e. the tiny streets that run perpendicular from Jaksa. Sometimes you will see a sign indicating there is a room (such as “KOS”), and sometimes nothing. Ask around. If you bargain, you can get quieter, cheaper rooms this way. Not girl-friendly however because they are usually run by local families.

The street south of Jalan Jaksa, Jalan Wahid Hasyim has been developed more recently and it has some good-value hotels. Among which, my favourites are the Ibis Arcadia (+6221-2300050) and Ibis Tamarin (+6221-3912323), which will cost you Rp.550,000 including breakfast. If that is the budget you intend to spend, don’t look anywhere else because nothing comes close in Jakarta in terms of value for money. Do make a reservation to make sure you have a room. If the Ibis are both full, you can try Paragon (+6221-3917070) and Cipta Hotel (+6221-3904701), but they aren’t as good by far. The new Akhmani Hotel, a four stars, is excellent as well and not so expensive (weekend rate of Rp. 650,000). We can expect a price increase when the place will be more well-known though.

The street south of Jalan Jaksa, Jalan Wahid Hasyim has been developed more recently and it has some good-value hotels. Among which, my favourites are the Ibis Arcadia (+6221-2300050) and Ibis Tamarin (+6221-3912323), which will cost you Rp.550,000 including breakfast. If that is the budget you intend to spend, don’t look anywhere else because nothing comes close in Jakarta in terms of value for money. Do make a reservation to make sure you have a room. If the Ibis are both full, you can try Paragon (+6221-3917070) and Cipta Hotel (+6221-3904701), but they aren’t as good by far. The new Akhmani Hotel, a four stars, is excellent as well and not so expensive (weekend rate of Rp. 650,000). We can expect a price increase when the place will be more well-known though.

There are a lot of locally-owned midrange hotels in Central Jakarta, in the areas of Senen, Pecenongan, Menteng and Pasar Baroe. They should all be second choices since hotels there are quite expensive for what you get. I tried a few ones because I arrived late in Jakarta with no reservations and I was always disappointed. Quite often, the hotels there are naughty spots and may have a karaoke/bar with prostitutes, for instance Golden Boutique, Classic Hotel, Hotel Menteng. You end up wondering if you are in a “short-time” hotel with regular clients. Two hotels I could recommend are:
- Formule 1 Hotel, in Menteng, very popular, is a low-budget equivalent of the Ibis hotel (you can book online on http://www.accor.com).
- Hotel Red Top (+6221-3500077) in Pecenongan: Clean, modern and well-priced with a weekend package at Rp 520,000.

Near Mangga Besar and Lokasari, there is another number of mid-range hotel options, that I do not recommend unless you want to stay in North Jakarta. Very often, these hotels have short-time rooms and some have bars/massage parlours/karaoke. If you came to Jakarta only for girls, then you won’t be bothered here and you will be right in the action.
My opinion is that it gets quite boring to be surrounded by hookers and dodgy guys and I’ll rather be in “normal” hotels. If you end up in a hotel with a mirror on the ceiling, a condom on the table, and a porn movie in the DVD player, don’t complain!
Possible options in Mangga Besar include:
Hotel Labu Indah (+6221-6009250, +6221-6009253), in the end of Jalan Labu, is a good place to stay, for around Rp. 200,000/night.
Prinsen Park Hotel (+6221-6289101): Correct price for this hotel, around Rp 200,000, located 100 meters from Lokasari Plaza.
Sparks Hotel (+6221-6252534) is new and clean but very noisy due to the karaoke and the bar.
Hotel Mercure Rekso (+6221-6248680): Perfect location and clean hotel. Popular with foreigners. You can get a room for as little as Rp 600,000 on weekends.

In South Jakarta, I believe there are less low-budget and midrange hotels available. You should stay here only if you do not intend to go up North (which, if I may say, is a very sad thing to do). Popular addresses are:
- Amaris Hotel (+6221-7267111), Rp 450,000, clean and well decorated. Short distance from Blok M.
- Grand Flora Hotel (+6221-7198000): Rp 800,000, good service, clean, good location, the best midrange accommodation in Kemang.
- Ambhara Hotel (+6221-2700888) is similar, with a certain Indonesian charm, but more expensive (Rp 900,000).
- Grand Mahakam (+6221-7209966): more luxurious and more expensive, it’s close to a 5-stars in terms of quality. Rp 1,000,000 per night.

Five-stars Hotels
5-stars hotels in Jakarta are well-worth the money. You will find them on average at least 3 times cheaper than in Europe, for a similar quality of service. If you are staying in 5-stars hotels, popular options are the Shangri-La, Hotel Mulia and Hotel Le Meridien which have good bars with live music.
Ritz-Carlton and Marriott were bombed twice so I would stay away from them.
Grand Hyatt is perfectly located, above the mall Plaza Indonesia, and if you book in advance, you can get a room for Rp 1.5 million.


Day activity: Malls/Spas/Cafés/Museums
Shopping for cheap stuff is one of my favourite things to do in Jakarta. Going to malls is actually the most popular activity of Jakartans, and you will find them packed during weekends. The hottest high-end mall in Jakarta is Grand Indonesia, which was completed in 2007. It is huge, and you can easily spend hours walking in it before seeing a shop twice. It has a good, non-expensive theatre, the Blitz Megaplex, on its last floor. Other luxurious malls are Senayan City and Pacific Place, all of them very similar. I think.

hop onto a cab and wanted to go malioboro hotel. then i ask him if he has any recommendation.

he recommended Golden Crown at Glodok Plaza

the spa is at 5th level. For 1.5hr massage, u can either choose 310k which is a private room to yourself or 245k which is in a hall which i guess there is some kinda of partition.

They provide complimentary food but the food cannot make it. Ordered from the menu instead. basically concept very similar to malaysia hotel spa

Not allowed to choose gers but you can tell the recep your expectations.

Ratings of the ger assigned to me:

Looks: 6 => dyed hair, not too bad, but i prefer fair indonesians and shes on the darker side.

Massage: 5 => turn on the tv and not concentrating on massaging me. the lady in malioboro hotel massage much better than her. i think only in China where you can find massage gers who can massage and later fuck. those gers tat have special services often cant compared to those who are ready in massage line

Special: Never take up. she never attempt to get me into the mood, suddenly just say turn over and ask if i wan to have sex.

Bali Nightlife Vs. Jakarta Nightlife: Which one is the Best?

A few people asked me how partying in Bali compared to Jakarta. They intended to spend some time in both and they wanted to know in which place they would have the best parties. I'm not a specialist of Bali nightlife, but I've been there enough times to have an opinion. If you think you know better, please comment.

Partying in Bali can be done almost exclusively in a tiny area that goes from Kuta-Legian to Seminyak.
In Kuta, the crowd is dominated by young Australians in T-shirt and shorts as well as tourists from all over the world. It is what I could call holiday partying: In any given nightclubs, you will find a whole bunch of people who just happen to be on holidays in the same spot; they aren't always regular clubbers and do not have a lot of expectations except getting drunks, hear music they know, find a girl/guy for the night, etc...
Kuta is laid-back but I don't really like it. One night is fine because it is a part of any trip to Bali, but after that, I get easily tired with the lack of "refinement".
Paddy’s and Bounty are the most famous places in this area: The entrance is free so you should at least try one of them.. Slightly better, you have the Sky Garden lounge which is similar to M Bar Go but more trendy these days: The crowd is more educated, the music not as predictable and you see more regular clients. Another popular venue in Kuta is the Hard Rock Café, where most patrons are locals or Asian people. I never tried it but I know they have some good rock bands.
Otherwise, you have a fairly good number of small bars with live music or DJs that are quiet most evenings. Actually, my favourite place in Kuta is the Deejay Café (update needed though because I went there 3 years ago) which is similar to a Jakarta's Kota nightclub, dark and populated by weirdos. It is a place for "afters" so you should go there only around 4-5 am... The music is tribal electro, the same you hear in Stadium.


Seminyak is only a few kilometers away from Kuta but it's far better. In Jalan Dhyana Pura, Bahiana is quite popular for latin music. Patrons are mostly expats or regular travellers, and you'll meet many french people (the owner is French). A little down the road, there are some bars with live music, and many gay spots actually. I think this part of Bali is the best place to start a night slowly in a relaxed atmosphere. Depending on the traffic, you can then choose to try Jalan Legian in Kuta (see above) or go directly to the Double Six area.

The Double Six area is where everyone who intend to stay up after 3am meets. The area has 4 main venues: Bacio, the best club in Bali at the time of writing, la Vida Loca, a popular hangout with live music and lots of Indo girls, the club 66 (Double Six), which can be great when they manage to fill it and Deja Vu, which is similar to Bacio. Doing the 4 of them in one evening is very easy and a fun thing to do! I forgot to mention Ku De Ta, very exclusive and perfect for a drink before sunset but way too expensive compared to other places (I paid 120 euros for a 2-persons meal with one mojito and a coke...).

Apart from Kuta/Legian/Seminyak, Bali is quiet. Ubud has a few bars with live music but it's definitely not a party place. Sanur is famous for having hundreds of "massage parlours" and karaokes but no good bars or clubs. Near Lovina Beach, i went to a really big club once with only Indonesian people inside but I forgot the name…

So how does all this compare with Jakarta?

To me, I think in terms of venues, Jakarta is much better than Bali. In Jakarta, you have at least 20 world-class venues that can host international DJ performances compared to 5-6 in Bali. This means that even after 3 years in Jakarta, i'm still discovering new places whereas in Bali one week is enough to try everything. This blog has almost 300 entries for bars and clubs in Jakarta, I’m sure I could never do the same thing in Bali. Jakarta 1 – Bali 0.

Also, Jakarta has a real clubbing culture when Bali is more focused on partying. Yes, partying and clubbing are different things. Clubs in Jakarta pay a growing attention to the music played and many residents DJ are starting to have a good knowledge of the worldwide electronic music scene. In Bali, music often comes second because the clubs have people from various backgrounds and to satisfy everyone, they choose to play mostly mainstream music. Unfortunately hearing all the latest radio hits one by one every night is not my thing at all. Jakarta 2 – Bali 0.

I also find the service (waiters, taxis, etc) to be worst in Bali, where people are always trying to over-charge you for everything you buy. This is probably due to the fact that most foreigners in Jakarta are expats, i.e. permanent residents of Indonesia, when most people in Bali are there for a short period of time. Clearly, I don't get the same respect in Bali than in Jakarta. I don't blame people for trying to make a living but surely I blame many westerners for behaving as people not worth respecting. Jakarta 3 – Bali 0.

Another thing I don't like about Bali, especially Kuta, is that it can be quite vulgar and cheap. In many clubs, you will find people getting really drunk, just like they would do in Dundee (Scotland, I was there and it was the same thing). When you have ten Aussies dancing without their T-shirts on next to you, you wonder why you had to fly 18,000 km to a paradise island to end up with the same idiots you have back home. Once again, one or two evening is fine, but too much of that would make me mad. Jakarta 4 – Bali 0.

Bali nightlife has one good point actually: It feels like holidays. And even though I don’t like it, I always spend a night partying in Kuta when I go to Bali. I drink an illusion in Bounty, go on the podium in Paddy’s, struggle to get a cab to Bahiana, then always end up too early in Double 6. I don’t know if it’s fun but I know that when I’m there I’m on holiday and nothing else really matters… Jakarta 4 – Bali 1.


In conclusion, if you are on holiday and you want to have fun, Bali is great. You will meet a lot of people from all over the world that are looking for the same thing as you. The music is not great, the venues are a little dirty and you might get ripped off by the taxi driver, but you will end up drunk in your hotel, probably with a girl if that’s what you are after. If you have more time to spend in Indonesia and if you are more serious about clubbing, come to Jakarta. Jakarta nightlife is completely different, but I'm sure you will enjoy it too. It’s not as laid-back, but maybe more “mature” and more diverse. In and around Aryaduta Suites, You should be able to go to South Jakarta there are many bars around Block M area, or you are equally near from Kota the red light district of Jakarta. Crown used to have a night club, but not sure if it is still there.

Heya bro.. the dancers at Malio are unknown quantity. I know a few that my frens hv asked n they can be booked, but a few others flat out refused and also the prices are different. Brother if you have a POSB ATM Card with a Cirrus stamp, you can also use the Danamon ATM. The fee is Singapore $2 per transaction. Danamon ATM allows you to draw a maximum of 2 million rupiahs per transaction. There is a wide range of transportation in Jakarta, each of them answering to different needs.. There is not one best way to get around, but different options that you have to know to make the best choice when going from point A to point B. Since there is a lack of common mass transportation (there is a lot of them actually but it's a huge mess and packed to the max), you will end up paying a lot for your transport in Jakarta if you have a lot of road to make.

During your stay in the capital, you might ride one of the following:

Becak: Man-powered rickshaw. Never tried, they have some in some areas of Glodok, it's more of an old chinese women thing, and I don't think even tourists dare taking it..

Bajaj : It's the equivalent of the motorized rickshaws in India or the tuk-tuk in Thailand. They cannot use the main roads so they are pretty much limited to operate in a smalll area . Some drivers will tell you that they can take you from Kemang to Kota, but it's crazy.. Bajaj is ok for distances up to 1 km or so. I use them when I have a very short trip to make and i don't want to walk, for instance if i'm back from the grocery store, 800 meters from my house, or back from Pizza Hut and I have to hurry back home. It costs between 3000 et 8000 rupiah. Above, you'll be better off taking a taxi.


Ojeks : Motorbike-taxis. Very convenient because it is very easy to find one and they will help you avoid traffic. The price must be negotiated before, and usually it's about 10000 to 15000 rupiah for a 20 minutes ride. There are two main problems with it though: It's extremely unsafe and you are directly exposed to the city's air pollution. If you want to start a business in Indonesia and you need an idea, a friend of mine wanted to launch some sort of "executive" ojeks, with a taxi-meter, a real helmet, a mask against pollution and a cleaning tissue at the end of the trip. He broke up with his girlfriend so he dropped his plan but I really think it would be a great idea.

Anggot: An anggot (or bemo or mikrolet) is a small van that picks up everyone on a well-defined route. It stops and goes approximately every 100 meters so it's not very fast and the worst part is the comfort since you are usually 8 or more in an area that should only accomodate 4 pygmies max.
The good part of it is that it's really cheap, around 2000 rupiah, no matter how far you go. I was using it on specific very short trip, like when I go to Mangga Dua Square from Stasiun Kota. Very local as well, people are usually amused to see bules in there.

Private buses: It's the cheapest way to make long connexions within the city (2000 rupiah), but during the day, they are extremely packed, hot and dirty and the safety is not the number one priority. At night, it can be OK because there are less people and it's not as hot. The most famous ones are the Kopaja (Koperasi Angkotan Jakarta, the green and white ones) and the MetroMini (the red and blue ones). Look at the letter of the buses, each one corresponds to an area: P= Pusat (centre of Jakarta), B= Barat (west), S=Selatan (South), U= Utara (North), T= Timur (East). Next to the letter, you have a number, that indicates the route.
For instance, the Kopaja S66 is the one that goes from Blok M to Manggarai. Once you memorize a few routes, it is not that bad to use.


Transjakarta: It's pretty good compared to the rest, though it's rare that you can make a whole trip using only the Transjakarta since inter-connexions are still not very numerous. They have their own dedicated lane, making it the fastest mean of transportation during the worst traffic hours. It is more expensive than a normal bus but the service, though imperfect, is much better than in Kopajas. I use it quite often, for instance from Plaza Indonesia to Kota.

Taxis: There are a lot of taxi brands in Jakarta, not all with the same tarification. The "tarif lama" or "tarif bawah" are the less expensive (around 30% less). The best brand is Express Taxi (and also the safest). I also like to take Transcab. The "tarif baru" are more expensive, starting
5000 rupiah, and don't always offer much more service than the others, except maybe for Blue Bird and Gamya, the two recommended taxi brands. Express, Blue Bird and Gamya taxis always put the meter on, but for other company you have to ask before entering the vehicle: Pakai meter? Do you use the meter?. You may also encounter the silver bird, about 20% more expensive than the usual blue bird taxis, but you ride in Mercedes...
Don't be paranoid about taxis, if you're new, just wait 50 seconds until a blue bird shows up (make sure it is a real blue bird and not a copy...) and take it. At worst, the guy may not take the shortest route if he sees you are new and you'll end up paying 2 dollars more.

Bali Nightlife Vs. Jakarta Nightlife: Which one is the Best?

A few people asked me how partying in Bali compared to Jakarta. They intended to spend some time in both and they wanted to know in which place they would have the best parties. I'm not a specialist of Bali nightlife, but I've been there enough times to have an opinion. If you think you know better, please comment.

Partying in Bali can be done almost exclusively in a tiny area that goes from Kuta-Legian to Seminyak.
In Kuta, the crowd is dominated by young Australians in T-shirt and shorts as well as tourists from all over the world. It is what I could call holiday partying: In any given nightclubs, you will find a whole bunch of people who just happen to be on holidays in the same spot; they aren't always regular clubbers and do not have a lot of expectations except getting drunks, hear music they know, find a girl/guy for the night, etc...
Kuta is laid-back but I don't really like it. One night is fine because it is a part of any trip to Bali, but after that, I get easily tired with the lack of "refinement".
Paddy’s and Bounty are the most famous places in this area: The entrance is free so you should at least try one of them.. Slightly better, you have the Sky Garden lounge which is similar to M Bar Go but more trendy these days: The crowd is more educated, the music not as predictable and you see more regular clients. Another popular venue in Kuta is the Hard Rock Café, where most patrons are locals or Asian people. I never tried it but I know they have some good rock bands.
Otherwise, you have a fairly good number of small bars with live music or DJs that are quiet most evenings. Actually, my favourite place in Kuta is the Deejay Café (update needed though because I went there 3 years ago) which is similar to a Jakarta's Kota nightclub, dark and populated by weirdos. It is a place for "afters" so you should go there only around 4-5 am... The music is tribal electro, the same you hear in Stadium.


Seminyak is only a few kilometers away from Kuta but it's far better. In Jalan Dhyana Pura, Bahiana is quite popular for latin music. Patrons are mostly expats or regular travellers, and you'll meet many french people (the owner is French). A little down the road, there are some bars with live music, and many gay spots actually. I think this part of Bali is the best place to start a night slowly in a relaxed atmosphere. Depending on the traffic, you can then choose to try Jalan Legian in Kuta (see above) or go directly to the Double Six area.

The Double Six area is where everyone who intend to stay up after 3am meets. The area has 4 main venues: Bacio, the best club in Bali at the time of writing, la Vida Loca, a popular hangout with live music and lots of Indo girls, the club 66 (Double Six), which can be great when they manage to fill it and Deja Vu, which is similar to Bacio. Doing the 4 of them in one evening is very easy and a fun thing to do! I forgot to mention Ku De Ta, very exclusive and perfect for a drink before sunset but way too expensive compared to other places (I paid 120 euros for a 2-persons meal with one mojito and a coke...).

Apart from Kuta/Legian/Seminyak, Bali is quiet. Ubud has a few bars with live music but it's definitely not a party place. Sanur is famous for having hundreds of "massage parlours" and karaokes but no good bars or clubs. Near Lovina Beach, i went to a really big club once with only Indonesian people inside but I forgot the name…

So how does all this compare with Jakarta?

To me, I think in terms of venues, Jakarta is much better than Bali. In Jakarta, you have at least 20 world-class venues that can host international DJ performances compared to 5-6 in Bali. This means that even after 3 years in Jakarta, i'm still discovering new places whereas in Bali one week is enough to try everything. This blog has almost 300 entries for bars and clubs in Jakarta, I’m sure I could never do the same thing in Bali. Jakarta 1 – Bali 0.

Also, Jakarta has a real clubbing culture when Bali is more focused on partying. Yes, partying and clubbing are different things. Clubs in Jakarta pay a growing attention to the music played and many residents DJ are starting to have a good knowledge of the worldwide electronic music scene. In Bali, music often comes second because the clubs have people from various backgrounds and to satisfy everyone, they choose to play mostly mainstream music. Unfortunately hearing all the latest radio hits one by one every night is not my thing at all. Jakarta 2 – Bali 0.

I also find the service (waiters, taxis, etc) to be worst in Bali, where people are always trying to over-charge you for everything you buy. This is probably due to the fact that most foreigners in Jakarta are expats, i.e. permanent residents of Indonesia, when most people in Bali are there for a short period of time. Clearly, I don't get the same respect in Bali than in Jakarta. I don't blame people for trying to make a living but surely I blame many westerners for behaving as people not worth respecting. Jakarta 3 – Bali 0.

Another thing I don't like about Bali, especially Kuta, is that it can be quite vulgar and cheap. In many clubs, you will find people getting really drunk, just like they would do in Dundee (Scotland, I was there and it was the same thing). When you have ten Aussies dancing without their T-shirts on next to you, you wonder why you had to fly 18,000 km to a paradise island to end up with the same idiots you have back home. Once again, one or two evening is fine, but too much of that would make me mad. Jakarta 4 – Bali 0.

Bali nightlife has one good point actually: It feels like holidays. And even though I don’t like it, I always spend a night partying in Kuta when I go to Bali. I drink an illusion in Bounty, go on the podium in Paddy’s, struggle to get a cab to Bahiana, then always end up too early in Double 6. I don’t know if it’s fun but I know that when I’m there I’m on holiday and nothing else really matters… Jakarta 4 – Bali 1.


In conclusion, if you are on holiday and you want to have fun, Bali is great. You will meet a lot of people from all over the world that are looking for the same thing as you. The music is not great, the venues are a little dirty and you might get ripped off by the taxi driver, but you will end up drunk in your hotel, probably with a girl if that’s what you are after. If you have more time to spend in Indonesia and if you are more serious about clubbing, come to Jakarta. Jakarta nightlife is completely different, but I'm sure you will enjoy it too. It’s not as laid-back, but maybe more “mature” and more diverse. Massage: Better to opt for indonesia gers. Used to try PRC (panda massage), they keep demanding for more and more tips. After spending a weekend hitting the bars and nightclubs in Jakarta, you will never be able to look at bourbon and coke or Midori and lemon the same way. The drinks in Jakarta are so cheap compared to European prices... Just a tip however, there is a distinct likely hood they will be watered down, which is just an excuse to drink more. The only problem is that you ending spending a lot more money because you can afford paying the $5 entrance fees and the $6 cocktails...

The Locals
Without question some of the most friendly people on earth... People talk to you and you will finish the evening with the feeling you know everyone in the club. Enough said.

When You Pick Up There Are No Surprises When You Get Back To The Hotel

You should add Malioboro to your list. Try both the spa and club. one entrance price for both locations. so you don't end up paying for both. You can go to the spa / club via the 3rd level without exiting from the building.

If your friends like some fantasy - so go Spark Hotel. The thematic massage is something like Haru Haru concept.

The Hotel Indonesia traffic circle fountain in Central Jakarta is generally famous as one of the capital's landmarks where festive celebrations often take place, but it recently served a different function for a drunk driver.

A black Toyota Avanza sped toward the fountain at around 3 a.m. on Wednesday. It crashed over a cement divider, was launched into the air and landed in the middle of the fountain.

The drunk driver, 23-year-old Rayindra Fransiskus, was not the first one to park his car in the famous fountain.

A security guard who witnessed the accident, Herman Stefanus, said Rayindra “must have been going more than 100 km per hour”.

"The car flew six meters above the fountain before it crashed down into the water," Herman said, adding that the car came from the direction of Jl. Jend. Sudirman.

Rayindra, who lives at the Bumi Serpong Damai complex in Tangerang, was unconscious after his crash landing and was rushed to the Cipto Mangunkusumo general hospital by police officers on night patrol.

"Blood was dripping from his forehead to his ears," Herman added.

A police officer at a police bureau near the fountain, A Kholid, said similar accidents were frequent.

"This year, we've already had five similar car accidents," he said.

The accidents always took place at around the same hour, and the drivers were always drunk, he added.

He also said that the drivers were young men in their early twenties. But today's accident was the worst compared to the previous ones because the car broke two fountain lamps and one water pump when it crashed.

"One lamp costs Rp 27 million. So, it's quite expensive," he added.

According to him, the car's front wheels were broken while most of its body remained intact. The car was later towed out at around 6 a.m. to a police station in Pancoran, South Jakarta.

The head of city ornaments at the Jakarta Park Agency, Djauhar Arifien, said similar car accidents often happened during holidays.

"Probably the drunk drivers are just returning from nightclubs," he said, adding that a Mercedes-Benz sedan also landed in the fountain some three weeks ago.

His said his team had proposed a plan to the Jakarta Transportation Agency to prevent such accidents.

"We have requested the Transportation Agency to immediately build rows of light speed bumps so that drunk drivers would be alerted as their cars approach the fountain," he added.

His request was delivered in February and he hoped it would be granted soon.

"Unfortunately, we are still waiting for the agency's response," he said

Before the fountain became a public space in the 1990's, Djauhar said its edge was entirely fenced. After the fence was removed, car accidents started occurring.

Every illegally parked vehicle will be towed to the police station and issued a parking ticket, Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Baharudin Djafar says.

"There shall be no more parking on roads. The Jakarta Police chief has instructed traffic officers to act on vehicles parked improperly on the side of roads, disrupting traffic," Baharudin said.

He added that the police would not be afraid to take stern action.

"If people still park illegally we will tow the vehicle to the police station," he said.

The policy applies to every vehicle in Jakarta, Baharudin explained.

Illegal parking is said to be one of the main causes of traffic congestion in Jakarta.

Classic spa is located at the basement. Bunker is the old name for the Club. In the past you access bunker via the spa but with the new renovation, you can access the club (previously called Bunker) also from the Lobby level. Classic Terminal is the low cost joint located on the 2nd Floor where you can get 2 ladies for only 400K rupiahs. The import girls from the spa also operate at the Club. Only the local girls are different.

Three arrested for attempted taxi robbery

Police have nabbed three persons who tried to rob a taxi driver in the Tanjung Priok area of North Jakarta on Friday.

“[The three] were arrested this morning at around 4.30 a.m.,” Tanjung Priok police chief Comr. Ade Rahmat said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

The three were identified by their initials as RE (17), JUM (28) and WI (20). They hailed a Indo Taksi at around 4 a.m. in the Mangga Dua area. When they passed Jalan Danau Indah Raya in Sunter, RE used a scarf in an attempt to strangle the driver, Kaswadi.

Kaswadi put up a fight. He attempted to release himself and cried for help. A number of locals then helped free him from the robbers. The residents beat the perpetrators before turning them over to the Tanjung Priok police.

Police immediately arrested the three and seized the scarf and Kaswadi's taxi as an evidence. The three will be charged with attempted robbery.

If they are willing to robbed a taxi driver, we should take from hotel and mall entrance. Taking from the street might not be advisable.
Please be careful, and take blue bird taxi and other reliable taxis.

1) get a nice massage and happy ending - Alexis, Malioboro?
2) get a FL for the nite, ie come back to my hotel room

Club 36 is located next to Hotel Jaykarta. A very popular club with many local Chinese patrons. Its always crowded on Fridays and Saturdays. Club 36 is famous for her Thai PR and dancers. The place is also a karaoke cum disco joint. Drugs such as estacsy can be easily obtained there.

Prices are reasonable, there is an entrance fee to the disco but if you are going to the karaoke you don't need to pay the entrance fee. Just tell the Lady PR at the reception.

There is a live local band that kicks up local favourites and occassionally some western hits. Quite good band actually, if you appreciate the local pop songs.

Showtime starts from 10pm with the Thai PRs gyrating on the bar top. Sexy dancers next 30mins and then the band takes to the floor. Entertainment is non stop and as the night gets warmer the crowd gets hotter. Many young chinese syts also patronise this club but always accompanied by their boyfriends. So don't think of picking any one of them up.

There are many local girls but these are the karaoke girls which can also be booked to accomany you at the disco. There are no rooms for any ST, if agreeeable you negotiate and bring the girl back to your hotel. Unless you are in the karaoke room, then you can do you business in the toilet behind close doors. The stake is high. The girls usually ask for 2juta for ON.

You are staying at Sari Pan Pacific - Jl Thamrin.

You are not so far away from the Kota District. A short taxi ride in a Bluebird (about 15000 rupiahs) brings you to the heart of the red light area in Jakarta. First stop should be Malioboro Spa. Tell the cabby and in no time you are there say 15mins away from your hotel. Get into the spa and change to the massage attire in the locker room. Go after 5pm and jump into the hot pool and enjoy the company of the sexy dancers in the warm waters. The come on at about 5pm. Price of the massage is about 300k rupiahs. If you want a happy ending it may cost you between 100 - 200k rupiahs. I would suggest you forget about the happy ending. After the hot pool, dry yourself up and go to the spa lounge on the 2nd flooor. Over there things are very happening. Sexy dancers every 30mins and some of them can be booked for ST at a price of 1.3juta. Local FL lined the floor and you can take your pick. 800k for a ST. If you prefer foreign imports, plenty of China Mei mei to choose from. Thai, Vietnamese, Kazahks and Spanish girls also available at 1.75juta for a ST. Thai sexy dancers cum models are also available at 2.25juta for an ST. Next you can visit the Malioboro Club at no additional cost. You need not pay for the entrance fee again as you have just patronised the Spa. Keep your receipt as evidence. The Club is a very good joint to relax. Nice music with female DJ and the pretty sexy dancers starts from 9pm. Only problem not all the sexy dancers are available for ST. Local girls are priced the same as the Spa. Different groupm from the spa. Local models are also available at 2.25juta for a ST.


Alexis is much further away. It may take you between 40min to an hour to reach from your hotel and that depends on the traffic. Prices, more expensive by about 100 - 150k. Quality of girls about the same as Malioboro.

If you want an FL for ON, try CJ Bar in Hotel Mulia. The FLs are very much younger than those at BATS.
